Counseling When You're Too Anxious to Get Help

Oct 11, 2018

There's no doubt that therapy can be one of the most effective ways to combat anxiety. Medication can keep the shaking and the racing heart at bay, but it can't teach you how to reshape your anxious thoughts into more rational ones. But for many people, getting help isn't as easy as it sounds.

Some have social anxiety, and can't bear the thought of sitting across from a stranger. Some could never dream of spilling their life stories. Others are too anxious to drive to a session. When mental illness keeps you from seeking the help you need, it can feel like you have nowhere to go but down. So how do you push past that? Here are a few of your options.
1. Just do it.
One solution is the most popular amongst the masses and therapists alike--just do it. It's hard, but as you're making that first phone call or walking into your first appointment, remember that the person you're talking to knows it's hard and wants to make it easier for you. Even if you don't say a word to your therapist, getting yourself in the door is the hardest part. And if you don't have a good experience? You can walk away and try again with someone who may be better suited for you. Always remember that you are the patient and you are in charge.
2. Talk to your primary care physician.
Most of the time, it's much easier to bring such a sensitive subject up to someone who knows you. Your regular doctor won't counsel you, but anxiety is likely something they see all the time. They'll be able to get you the resources that you need and help you set everything up.
3. Write down your feelings.
It may feel silly, but writing down all of the things you'd like to say to your therapist can open up so many conversations you may not have ever had otherwise. You can use what you've written as a note card for your session, or you can hand them the paper and let them read your thoughts instead of hear them. Anxiety can at times be strong enough to take your voice from you, but it's important to remember that your voice is not the only tool you have.
