Bridget Jones and the Importance of Give and Take in a Relationship

Dec 04, 2019

If you love romantic comedies, you've probably heard that Bridget Jones's Diary is a modern classic. As a novel and a movie, Bridget Jones's Diary is likely to go down as one of the funniest, most poignant

tales marking the turn of the century. The book was published in 1996 and the movie came out in 2001.

The Love Triangle

Bridget Jones's Diary stars Renée Zellweger as Bridget Jones and Colin Firth and Hugh Grant as her two possible love interests. Who will Bridget finally end up with? The sweet, serious, slightly geeky guy who steals her heart or the absurdly sexy, cheating boss that she's having an affair with?

Believe it or not, this is a problem many of us face in daily life--having to choose between the nice guy and the "bad boy" who nonetheless has a lot of appeal.

The Nice Guy vs. the "Bad Boy"

Playing the bad guy was definitely a change for Hugh Grant who had always played more serious, likable roles before. Yet, he rose to the occasion as this devilish rogue who charms Bridget with his covert flirting and his unabashed sexuality.

Colin Firth, on the other hand, is a more reserved character who doesn't make the best first impression on Bridget the first time he meets her. However, the more she gets to know him, the more she's impressed by his dedication to his work as a human rights lawyer and his overall sweetness and reliability.

Bridget's experiences show us that we all need to get to know someone well before making snap judgments about them. Patience is important in a relationship. And although sexual attraction is necessary, it's more important for a person to be good at heart.

How to Find Someone Giving and Supportive

In one great scene, Firth and Grant actually have a fistfight over Bridget with people on the street watching intensely and cheering them on. So we see that although Firth is a serious type of character, he's not lacking in grit. He might tell Bridget in one scene that he likes her "just the way she is" but he's also willing to fight for her, cook for her and help her out with her job.

We all need to find someone supportive like this who is willing to give as well as take in a relationship.

Loving and Living with Humor and Positivity

The story is not just a love triangle though. It's also about what it's like to live as a single girl in London in our modern society. It's a difficult life and you have to plod through it one way or the other. However, the best way is to do so with a lot of humor and positivity, both of which can be found in Bridget Jones's Diary.
