For a Racing Mind, Slow the Soul

Every individual will face a moment of panic, a split second of dread, at least once in their life. For some people, the symptoms of anxiety can be constant and profuse. When we find our mind running nonstop and our breath shaking, we must take the time to remind ourselves of who we are and what we want in life. Anxiety does not have to stop you from being who you want to be.


Journaling and other forms of self-expression can be helpful tools for mental relief. When writing, it can help to focus on recurring thoughts; this can help you notice patterns of thinking that might be negatively affecting your life. At the same time, you don't want to focus solely on negative things. Another recommendation is to write down at least one thing that drives you every day. Think about what made you happiest that day or what gave you hope; the goal is to let your mind release and help set your thoughts back on course. If possible, stop and write the second you find yourself becoming anxious. Writing before bed and after you wake up can also help set your mind on track.


If your breathing ever becomes erratic or you feel a panic attack beginning, try to stop and calm yourself in a safe space. Place your hands behind your head and attempt to steady your breath. Focusing on something else can help distract you from racing thoughts. Don't feel rushed, close your eyes and think about yourself calmly floating down on a slow river. Unless that thought concerns you; if so, think of something that brings you peace.


If you're comfortable with it, let a close friend or family know how you are feeling. Having an ally can help you remember that you don't have to be alone with your thoughts. Daily exercise such as walking and dancing can be fun and helpful ways to relieve some stress, as well. Most importantly, if you feel comfortable with talking to a professional, try it out. Professionals are not there to judge and are there solely for your benefit. They want to make sure that you can live your life to the fullest, and will try their best to help you overcome the stressors and triggers in your life. If you feel it's time to talk, contact us.
