Supporting Your Partner During Difficult Times

When an unexpected crisis surfaces and shakes up a person's life, it can cause fear and vulnerability. If a person is trying to protect themselves, then they may view their vulnerability as a weakness, which can be frustrating if their partner is trying to comfort them. So, when your partner is going through a painful situation and is pushing you away, there are a few steps that can help.

Give Them Time

It is imperative to give your partner time to process. Whether it's a death in the family, loss of a job, or anything that could cause discomfort and pain, it's essential to give your partner the space to process the situation. Make sure they know you're available when they need to talk, but don't push—pushing anyone to speak before they are ready can be disastrous. Opening up to one's feelings can be difficult for some, so respecting their process is necessary. Understand that your partner may not handle situations the way you would, so be sympathetic and patient.

Make Them Feel Needed

Although your partner is going through a difficult time, making them feel needed is essential. Acting like they are glass and unable to accomplish necessary tasks will cause them to become agitated. They may feel weak and useless, which will create the opposite effect of what you are hoping. Sometimes, the idea of being productive is what will help your spouse overcome hardships.

Date Them

One of the best things a spouse can do for their partner is to date them. Take them out, spend quality time with them, invite those who your spouse enjoys spending time with. Keep in mind, depending on the situation, your spouse may not want guests, but that is something that you can discuss with them. If your spouse is up to hosting some people, invite those who are essential to her. Please do not ask your personal friends because that will only harm their emotional/mental healing. If your spouse is opposed to having guests, use this time to plan fun trips that will encourage them to leave the house and focus on something positive.
