PTSD Therapy Works!

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) was originally thought to be only a disorder effecting veterans. However, today it is widely acknowledged that PTSD can effect anyone who has experienced a life event which contained violence or the threat of violence. Some prominent causes are sexual assault, accidents and natural disasters.

When something scary or upsetting happens which is out of the usual chain of events it can naturally be hard to adjust back to everyday living. Sometimes people will feel more stressed or vigilant and will have trouble sleeping. Other time people will have uncontrollable flashbacks or preoccupations with what happened. Some people try to cope with these feelings by avoiding talking about the event or avoiding situations which bring back memories. This is natural and understandable but it is not necessarily helpful to your overall well-being.

This is why we recommend that you seek out a therapist if something like this happens. Trained psychologists know just how to help you cope with negative feelings and learn to acclimate to stressful events. PTSD therapy techniques vary but what they all have in common is a basis in tried and proven science. Cutting edge research done with survivors of the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka has taught psychologists more about which techniques work best for treating PTSD and which are less effective. More recent research has even allowed scientists to discover who is more at risk of developing PTSD after a traumatic event.

Therapists are trustworthy and helpful, educated people and if you suspect you have PTSD, this is the time to seek help!
