Anxiety Counseling; You Are Not Alone

Mar 23, 2017

Occasional anxiety is a normal part of life and sometimes it can be helpful. It can encourage you to study harder for an upcoming test. Or allow your senses to be heightened if you are walking to your car after dark, making you more aware of your surroundings. This type of anxiety is meant to be temporary, useful for a moment but not as a continuous state. But sometimes the feeling of anxiety doesn’t go away after the necessity for it has passed. Sometimes the anxiety comes when there isn’t any sort of external stimulus to cause it. And sometimes, anxiety can seriously interfere with your day to day life, to the point where your daily activities such as relationships, job performance, and school work are negatively impacted.

It’s important to be self-aware so you know when normal anxiety crosses the line into a possible disorder.

Here are some symptoms to look out for:
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability
  • Muscle tension
  • Sleep problems
These are only a few symptoms. Check out The National Institute of Mental Health for more information on symptoms and the different types of anxiety disorders.

If you believe you might have anxiety levels that are higher than normal, speaking to your primary care physician and/or a licensed professional counselor is imperative to your health. Anxiety Disorders are not something that will simply go away and, if left untreated, they can seriously impair your ability to live a happy and productive life. This is not something you have to struggle with alone and you must be as open as possible with your doctor and/or counselor. They are in this profession because they want to help, so help them to help you. According to Goodtherapy.org;

“Effective therapy can significantly reduce or eliminate symptoms associated with anxiety in a relatively short time, allowing a person to resume regular activities and regain a sense of control. Although people may not be able to identify the cause of their anxiety, after attending a few therapy sessions, many people are able to pinpoint the source and a therapist can help a person work on those deeper concerns.”

You are not alone and you do not have to go through this alone. Therapy can drastically reduce your symptoms and allow you to regain a sense of normality and enjoyment in your life. Seek help and it will be worth it.
