Couples Counseling: Increase Your Chances of Success

The decision to enter couples counseling, is a positive one. It gives you hope in salvaging your relationship, it teaches you how to work together amicably and allows you to express your feelings in a safe environment. To maximize its benefits, you have to work hard. Learn how to increase your chances of success with couples therapy.

Practice what you learn in sessions. The counselor will teach you new principles in managing your relationship. Take every opportunity to repeat actions that reinforce these ideas. Your counselor will probably give you homework assignments. Give these the time and consideration they deserve.

Put more than your heart into your counseling sessions. You need to involve your brain as well. Do this by setting reasonable goals and expectations. Learn not to take offense when the counselor or your partner reveals difficult truths to you. Listen with an open mind. Force yourself to get out of your comfort zone because you have to make changes and growth is painful.

While it is tempting to dwell on the past, now is not the time to do so. You must let go of your old familiar relationship habits as you forge a new path. Focus on the present. For example, a counselor will likely advise you not to bring up old incidents when you argue, but concentrate on the issues at hand. Take one moment at a time as you learn how to communicate effectively as this is one of the most important objectives of therapy.
