How Does Family Therapy Work?
May 25, 2017
Many
families argue or bottle up anger and disappointment. But it does not
always have to be that way. Sometimes, with just a little family
therapy, family members can start to see eye-to-eye and return
to enjoying
sharing time together. Family therapy is not only for "dysfunctional"
relationships; it can be for any number of difficulties. Sometimes
family therapy can help members learn
to deal with stressful events or how to support struggling members. So how does family therapy work? There are a few ways it can work; role taking, reflection or
practicing listening can help.
For instance, sometimes if
you play a game in which you pretend to be the very person who
frustrated you, you can begin to understand his or her perspective in a
new way. This can also be fulfilling if the frustrated
family member plays you in a role play and you see him or her begin to
understand you better. Sometimes taking the opposite side in a debate
works wonders. Who better to convince you of your shortcomings than
yourself?
Reflection can help with
understanding how others actions within the home affect each other.
Family therapy can give the much needed time and place to start talking
about what is working and what is not working. Many
times arguments stem from a fundamental misunderstanding, and not from
ill-will or malice.
Family therapy provides a
mediator of a therapist to encourage an environment in which everyone
listens just as much as speaking. Sometimes a good way to practice
listening is to have the goal of being able to summarize
the speaker's speech. Instead of spending all that time that the family
member is talking thinking of how to respond, it gives a chance for real
listening and reflection. These methods of therapy can help to restore a
sense of respect in the family which can
open the door to fulfilling interaction and even open-hearted love.
