Expressing Your Feelings and Doing Something Creative to Combat Depression
May 03, 2018
When you're feeling depressed,
you're inclined to keep everything bottled up inside you. You may not
want to talk to anyone—family members or friends. You may not want to go
out as much. And you might also feel like nobody understands you.
Depression Skews Your Point of View
At
times, people who are depressed feel as though others are judging them
or telling them to do things that they don't want to do. They might also
feel like they
are failures—like everything they do is falling short of the
expectations others have for them.
Depression Makes You Feel Inert
Depression
makes you feel inert, like you don't want things to change. The effort
of getting out of bed might be too much. The same goes for getting
dressed to go
outside. Any sustained activity might tire you out. And this can result
in eating too much, sleeping too much and not exercising, all of which
can make you feel more depressed. So it's a vicious circle.
Expressing Your Feelings
If
you're feeling low, upset, anxious, worried, panicked or depressed, it
helps to express these feelings to someone. You can speak to a friend or
a family member.
Or you can get a therapist. You can even just write down all your
feelings in a journal.
Doing Something Creative
Doing
something creative can also help combat depression. You can write a
poem or short story that expresses how you feel. Paint something or
sculpt something. Take
photos of things that move you. Make a short film. Anything creative,
from cooking a good meal to starting a blog can help you to express your
feelings and feel lighter. Plus making something always gives you a
feeling of achievement as well.
