5 Reasons Why You Should Seek Family Therapy

Family Therapy? You may have heard about it. You may be interested in it. You may have even wondered if your family needs to try it. Wondering if therapy is something your family can benefit from, can be confusing. There are times that all families need help communicating with each other, however, how do you know if therapy is necessary. Below is a list of 5 reasons why your family may need to seek therapy. Be aware that the following list is by no means a comprehensive list of reasons to go to a family therapist. If you are in doubt, please contact us, so that we may help you decide if it is right for you.
  1. Communication challenges. Each family has unique challenges with communication. Learning to express your thoughts in a positive way is important. Additionally, it never hurts to learn valuable communication tools which will also serve you in the future.
  2. Children with mental health challenges. Anxiety, stress, and depression are among a few of the feelings children face at younger and younger ages today. Even if the child is going to individual therapy, family therapy is also important since a child struggling with these challenges usually affects the entire family unit.
  3. Marital challenges. There is no doubt that constant or long-term conflict can be harmful to the whole family. Unresolved issues generally bring about resentment and pain while creating a difficult environment for relationships to flourish.
  4. A child with a chronic illness. A child that suffers from a chronic illness not only affects the child but unquestionably affects the whole family. The chronically ill child needs extra care and the doctor appointments can add up to financial and emotional stress. Other children in the family can feel left out or forgotten. Family counseling can help everyone discuss the difficult situation the whole family is experiencing.
  5. A drastic change in the family. This can range from moving or changing schools, to a death of a parent or another close family member. In situations like these, some people might want to "clam up" and not talk about their difficult and painful feelings that come along with these type of changes. A quality family therapist can be extremely helpful in guiding discussions that can aid the process of healing.

Communication is an important key to having all family members feel close and strong within the family unit. Without clear communication, people can get frustrated and angry, lashing out or holding in feelings. If either of these reactions happen, communication breaks down, causing unwanted friction within the family.
