Anxiety Counseling: 6 Unexpected Signs of Anxiety To Watch Out For

Anxiety is one of those things we all think we'll recognize when we see it. After all, it comes from the word anxious, and we all know how that feels. The nervousness, a twisting stomach, jumpiness, maybe a stutter in your voice or looking at your watch too often. You know, someone who looks anxious. While that is one form anxiety can take, it's far from the only set of symptoms you can have. Some other symptoms, which you may not have known to watch for, include...

Symptom #1: Irritability and Anger


One of the common symptoms of anxiety is that you feel irritable, or that you experience bouts of anger. If you find yourself snapping at people for no reason, or losing your temper over little things, it's possible that could be a sign of anxiety. That is not a guarantee, but it should be noted, just in case some of the other symptoms are manifesting as well.


Symptom #2: Trouble Sleeping


Difficulty sleeping is another sign that you might be suffering from anxiety. Whether it's insomnia, a difficulty in getting your thoughts to stop racing, or just having a hard time staying asleep once you finally manage to get there, these can all be potential signs of anxiety. Especially if the conditions are all right for you to sleep (comfortable bed, you're getting enough exercise, there are no distractions, etc.) and you just can't seem to make it happen.


Symptom #3: Muscle Tension


How often do you get muscle tension? The kind of stiffness where your neck doesn't want to turn, or where your shoulders hurt when you try to stretch them out? That kind of muscle tension can be caused by a variety of different things, but it is also common among people who suffer from anxiety. Put simply, it's a byproduct of all the stress the sufferer's mind is always under, and that translates into physical discomfort.


Symptom #4: Feeling Weak, or Tired


Have you ever had those days where you just don't have the energy to do anything? Even if you have a looming deadline, or a big project at work that needs your attention, you just can't summon the will to get up and do it? That might be a symptom of anxiety. So if you're feeling constantly drained, and sapped of the energy you need to get out and close deals, or finish projects, it's possible that anxiety is the root cause.


Symptom #5: Headaches


We all get headaches from time to time, but those who suffer from anxiety tend to have them on a fairly constant basis. If you find yourself dealing with headaches far more often than your co-workers, and if you need to carry around a bottle of extra-strength medicine, then it might be time to check and see if it's anxiety that's causing your pains.


Symptom #6: Frequent Trips To The Bathroom


Do you keep a stack of books in your bathroom because you spend so much time in there? When you go out with friends, do you have to excuse yourself so often that you totally lose track of the conversation? That kind of constant need to relieve yourself can be connected to anxiety.


It's important to remember that any one of these symptoms, or even a few of them, may have explanations other than an anxiety disorder. However, if you find yourself ticking items off the list with regular frequency, then it might be time to talk to a doctor.
