Anxiety Counseling for Good and Bad Changes in Your Life

Let's say that you experience some kind of change in your life. Maybe the change is not so good. Maybe your company goes under and you get laid off. Obviously, it's going to be tough for you to adjust to this change.

But let's also consider what might happen if you experience a good change. Maybe you get a promotion. Now, adjusting to a promotion can also be difficult. You'll have more responsibilities. You might have to work more hours. You might have to work with different people. So even a good change can be difficult to adjust to.

Acknowledge Your Feelings

The first thing you need to do is to acknowledge that you're going through a change and that you're going to need to adjust to that change in one way or the other. Don't ignore the change. Don't tell yourself that it's a good thing and you should be celebrating. There are no "shoulds" in this scenario. If you're not feeling celebratory, you don't need to celebrate.
Instead, you should pay attention to the fact that you're feeling anxious. You should pay attention to your feelings and what they're trying to tell you. This is the first step to dealing with them.

Adjusting to the Change

You need to take some time out to figure out what you need to do differently now that there's been a change. For example, if you just got married, you and your partner will need to adjust to each other's patterns. Marriage is a good change but it can cause a lot of stress. So it helps to sit down, ideally with your partner, and figure out who's going to do what in the home as well as who's going to contribute how much. Similarly, if you've gotten a promotion, sit down with your new colleagues and learn as much as you can about your new position.

Taking Time and Seeking Support

In addition to adjusting to the change, you should also give yourself some time. You're not going to get everything right at the first try. You might have to make a couple of different attempts before you figure out something that works. And during those attempts, feel free to talk things out with friends and family or with your therapist.
