Feeling Anxious or Depressed? 3 Ways to Make Yourself Feel Better Quickly
Feb 13, 2019
Are you feeling anxious, stressed out, or depressed? Depression and anxiety affect more people than you may think. However, there are many ways to relieve your depression or anxiety. Here are three ways to help you feel better quickly.
Improve Your Physiology
Your physiology is important. The way you carry yourself affects the way you feel inside. If you constantly go around with your shoulders slumped forward, with your fingers nervously intertwined, with your back bent, dragging your feet and so on, you are not going to feel any better. Practice improving your posture. Stand up straight and pretend to be confident and calm, even if you do not feel like it inside. Smile at other people and do not avert your gaze when you talk with them. Speak with a loud and confident voice. Eventually, you will start feeling better inside as well.
Get a Pet
A pet is a great companion. Studies have shown that having a pet reduces your anxiety and can help alleviate feelings of depression and loneliness. Everyone has a need for companionship and a need to feel loved, and dogs and other pets give that unconditionally. They also provide you with a way to talk about your feelings. Do not be ashamed to talk to your cat about your day and about the way you are feeling inside.
Distract Yourself
Anxiety can cause you to play over the same thoughts in your mind,
over and over again, like a tape recorder that never stops. Once you
interrupt this train of thought, however, you will often feel better,
even if it's just for a while. Go out with friends,
go get lost in a movie or a game, engross yourself in a novel, or lose
yourself in some calming music.
Finally, talk it over with a counselor.
