Exercise to Alleviate Anxiety and Depression Symptoms

Finding your motivation to begin any routine is difficult when you suffer from depression or anxiety. Memes on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram exclaiming exercise is a cure-all antidepressant and mood elevator only tell half the story. When you are depressed or anxious it is easy to see the memes, read the 'success' stories and wonder why it hasn't worked for you. Studies have proven the benefits of exercise as a holistic addition to treatment for overall mental health. The key is to find the right exercise for you, stay dedicated, and find a mental health provider than can keep you motivated.


When trying to find exercises to help alleviate symptoms of anxiety or depression find an activity you can enjoy. Yoga or running is not for everyone. Walking is one of the most underrated sources of cardio, a short walk can help as much as a long run. Dance cardio is also a good form of exercise that is not generally discussed when talking about exercises for mental health and wellness. If these options are not right for you, strength training and lifting have the same benefits as yoga and cardio.


Once you have decided on a type of exercise that works best for you, try to schedule time for the activity several days a week. It does not have to be a lot of time, but the schedule will help you continue once the original motivation fades. It's important to remember that motivation will come and go, structure and dedication to exercising will be what helps you continue on. Getting out of bed can often be the most difficult part when deciding on an exercise program. Your mental health provider will be able to help with motivation techniques.


While exercise may not be for everyone, there are health benefits that shouldn't be ignored. It is a good addition to any new or current depression or anxiety treatment. With the right exercise, easy to follow schedule and motivational support it can help reduce your depression and anxiety symptoms.
