How to Know If CBT Is Right for You

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a method of psychological treatment that helps restructure a patient's thought process in order to change or prevent unwanted behaviors and feelings. Simply put, CBT can help one recognize their own distorted thought patterns that may be causing a lack of motivation, low self-esteem, anxiety, stress, or other undesirable feelings and conditions that may lead to behaviors such as relapsing or having panic attacks. It differs from other methods of psychological treatment in the fact that it aims to attack the root of these behaviors and keep them from happening rather than just providing ways to cope with them after they have already occurred (although CBT can help with that, too). It helps patients change their thought patterns to be more constructive and useful rather than degrading and debilitating.


When is it effective?

CBT has been proven to be an effective treatment for several conditions, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, bulimia, bipolar disorder, and OCD, but is most commonly associated with the treatment of depression and anxiety. If you suffer from any of these conditions, CBT is worth looking into, as it can provide a new, refreshing approach to therapy that many find worthwhile. CBT is most effective for patients who are open-minded, enjoy working in a collaborative environment with their therapist, and are comfortable working with themselves outside of therapy sessions, as changing one's thought patterns is an ongoing process.
