Understanding PTSD and how Therapy can Help you Heal

Understanding PTSD

If you're afflicted with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) you know all too well the struggles that confront you daily. You live in a world where you feel alone and unsafe. Many people are unable to move forward in their lives after a tragic event. They remain hopeless, anxious and tormented by their trauma even if it was many years ago. It's normal to experience some stress after any trauma. However, if several months pass and you're still unable to cope with daily life, you may suffer from PTSD.

Trauma

There are many types of trauma; car accidents, domestic violence, abuse, and wartime trauma, to name just a few. Some trauma survivors experience shock and disbelief after trauma and return to normal life unscathed. Others are deeply scarred and they may not manifest symptoms for months or even years later.


When PTSD develops, the survivor remains in a state of heightened sensitivity as if they are repeatedly experiencing the trauma. It begins to take over their lives as they remain in constant fear and torment. Unresolved trauma leaves the survivor with a myriad of unbearable symptoms.

Symptoms

Those who suffer from PTSD may experience nightmares, flashbacks, insomnia, rage, anxiety, depression and panic attacks. This is not an exhaustive list and also depends on the individual factors in their lives. It's difficult to maintain relationships, especially when others don't understand and tell you to just get on with your life and get over it. Unfortunately, time doesn't heal all wounds and treatment may be indicated.


Treatment

Our practice offers cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which is a unique type of treatment for PTSD. Its premise is that thoughts and feelings powerfully impact us and the way we see ourselves and others. Identifying harmful thought patterns is the first step to healing.
