Reconcile Your Intimate Relationship with Fresno Couples Counseling

Many psychiatrists mistakenly believe that couples therapy is about having two people in the same room but addressing each of their problems separately. However, this makes the situation worse in which the couple insists their therapist must fix the other partner. When a couple enters counseling, it's because they have conflicting values that cannot be resolved together. This is often the root cause of unfounded accusations, assigned blame, and persistent distrust, that will pile up over time until both parties are at their wits' end. To make things difficult, most couples are doubtful of the therapist's ability to repair the damage done in such a toxic relationship.


But couples counseling can be a life-changer when the couple finally decides to see a counselor, usually after enduring years of endless arguments. They now have a third person to provide them with a different perspective on what is happening in their relationship. The couples therapist could offer them advice on how to de-escalate stressful situations, learn to compromise so that they can find common ground. This involves asking them about their main goal for attending therapy, followed by setting down boundaries to make them feel comfortable about speaking from the heart. The counselor is there to bridge a gap between two people with conflicting beliefs, addressing their communication skills and ways it needs improvement as to prevent further misunderstandings, taking note of how they relate to each other.


An experienced counselor would address the couples' mental health issues, employment status, personal hobbies, and consider how these have an impact on their lifestyle choices. They address why using the "right or wrong" mindset in a heated argument is counterproductive, instead opting for a collaborative process where the couple tries a new approach towards managing their uncontrollable emotions.
