Three Methods for Relieving Your Anxiety

Anxiety can be triggered by a wide variety of situations. Whether anxiety originated due to occurrences of everyday life or was born as a result of past trauma, there are several tools that can be used to combat your anxiety.


The first and most common method of anxiety relief is a breathing exercise. To begin, start by taking a long, deep breath through your nose, then hold it in your lungs for several seconds. As you release the breath from your lungs through your mouth, imagine you are expelling your anxieties from your body. During an anxiety attack, it is common for patients to calm themselves by breathing at a slow, even pace. Regulating your breathing may help reduce your symptoms and calm you down.


Another method you can use to help reduce your anxiety is called grounding. The "grounding" method employs anything that you can use to help control racing thoughts and bring you back to the present. A simple way to "ground" yourself could be by rolling a pendant, a coin, or other applicable object with a tactile surface between your fingers. The sensation can help your brain correct its course and draw you out of any unsettling thoughts that might be troubling you.


Finally, you can always attempt to reduce your anxiety by writing down what you're anxious about. By deciphering what is making them anxious, many people find that there are solutions to problems or insecurities that they would have otherwise not considered when in their anxious state. A journal can also help you keep track of thought patterns you may suffer from on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, and can help you recognize potential triggers that may spark anxiety.


There are many different methods you can use to reduce your anxiety. One that works for someone else might not work for you, so it is important to try multiple options and to explore what types of calming actions help ease your anxiety most effectively.
