4 Self-Care Tips for Teens

We're used to seeing the stereotype of an irritable, moody teenager. Parents may leave them alone thinking they'll "grow out of it", but their teen may be experiencing depression or anxiety. 20% of teenagers will experience depression before they reach adulthood, and that's just one mental illness.

In addition to the rising rates of teen suicides, adolescents experiencing mental illnesses may also turn to addictive substances. They may not believe that their parents take them seriously or lack the resources to ask for help on their own. A study showed that half of all high school students know a classmate who sells drugs, the most common of these being marijuana and addictive prescription drugs.

Addiction and mental illness can follow teenagers throughout the rest of their lives. To prevent this from happening, using self-care to keep themselves on the right path is essential.

1. Don't Isolate Yourself

When you're depressed, it's easy to close yourself off from friends and family. Doing so will only make your bad feelings worse, so try to socialize as much as you can. Spend time with supportive people who know what you're going through. If possible, consider getting involved in volunteer work. Helping others in need can improve your mood drastically.

2. Use Positive Affirmations

Having an addiction or mental illness doesn't make you any less of a person. It's important to tell this to yourself often so that you can seek help and advice when you need it. Write it down if you need to!

3. Avoid Dangerous Situations

If you're invited to a gathering where you know drugs and alcohol will be present, have another plan of action. Skip this party in favor of having your own gathering of trusted friends in a safe environment.

4. Express Yourself

Many teens find that journaling, drawing, crafting, or other methods of channeling your negative feelings into art can bring great relief.
