PTSD Symptoms Do Not Always Arise From Combat

Many people seem to believe that only veterans of war can suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder due to the traumatic nature of battle, but this simply isn't true. War is not the only traumatic experience a person can have. Trauma can be experienced by anyone of any age, though not everyone will suffer from PTSD from said trauma.


PTSD can occur and linger after any traumatic situation occurs and the victim or witness doesn't have the tools to understand how to process the event. If they respond to the situation with anger, they will continue to feel that anger. If they react to the trauma with fear, they will remain afraid without proper treatment in response to their emotions.


Examples Of Non-Combat Trauma

People go through various experiences in their lives that redefine the way that they see the world and the way that they see themselves. When the experience is negative, and the person in question may cope with the situation in an unhealthy or inappropriate way. They can suffer prolonged after-effects and the damaging symptoms of PTSD. Examples include, but are not limited to:


Car Accidents: A person that survives a horrific car accident may not be able to get into a car again. They may even not want to leave their homes. They may suffer anxiety and panic attacks and relive the accident over and over again, both when asleep and awake.


Acts Of God: Living through an earthquake in Peru or a tornado in Missouri can cause survivor's guilt and existential anger that, when not addressed properly, can manifest in nightmares and persistent negative thoughts about the world.


Abuse: Any sort of abuse, such as physical, psychological, or sexual, can cause trauma that will stay with a victim forever if they are not treated. The victim can lose interest in once-beloved hobbies and activities. They may be constantly fearful that the abuse will occur again, even when the perpetrator isn't in the picture.


Further, sleep disturbances, flashbacks, and the constant feeling of being on-edge are not healthy, physically or psychologically. The symptoms of PTSD can and will intrude into all aspects of your life if effective help is not sought after and given.
