Not Sure If You're Depressed? Here Are Questions to Ask Yourself

Mar 25, 2021

Everyone gets down from time to time, but how do you know if you're depressed or just have the blues? Depression can be different for everyone. For some people, depression expresses itself as complete lethargy. You don't feel like doing anything. Your work suffers, and when you have free time, you don't feel the urge to go out or meet friends. For other people, however, there is no feeling of numbness in depression. Instead, their head is moving a mile a minute. The anxious, worried thoughts keep coming and paralyze the person. And once again, this results in not wanting to do anything. There could be small signs, and together they can build up to a red flag. If you suspect that you are depressed, here are questions to ask yourself:

  1. Do You Feel Joyful? Nobody feels joyful or happy all the time. In life, we all experience let downs no matter how successful we might be. But if you aren't finding joy in things you normally would, and feel like your level of joy or happiness is a great deal lower than what it once was, then you might be depressed.
  2. Do You Feel Enthusiastic? Are you able to go do things? Do you exercise, cook, work, hang out with friends and family, go for movies or just call up a friend spontaneously for a chat? If you feel less enthusiasm to do normal day to day things, you may be depressed.
  3. Do You Take Pride in Your Appearance? Not everyone is a fashionista, but most of us try to keep ourselves looking presentable at least. If you find that your urge to dress up has taken a plunge and you no longer care what people think about how you look, you may be depressed.
  4. Do You Keep Your Surroundings Clean? One of the symptoms of depression is that the person really doesn't care about living in a mess. You may not be the most organized person around, but if the state of your surroundings has deteriorated completely, that might be because you're depressed.
  5. Are You Binging or Turning to Unhealthy Habits? In order to deal with depression, some people do turn to unhealthy habits such as smoking, drinking excessively, eating excessively or watching TV constantly. If you feel like you're doing too much of something, or just to avoid feeling pain, you might be depressed.

Contact us for if you think you may have depression and we can help you work through challenges depression may bring.
