PTSD and How Talk Therapy Helps

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) arises when an individual has been through an event that their mind and body can not comprehend or cope with using its usual coping processes. As we grow older, our brains learn new coping skills until we have a bank of stored strategies that work best for us depending on the situation. We learn these through parents and friends talking us through difficult times, by gaining knowledge about the world and how to navigate it, and through our own trial and error.

According to the DSM-5, some symptoms of PTSD include:
  • Nightmares
  • Intrusive thoughts
  • Feeling isolated
  • Flashbacks
  • Emotional or physical reactivity to things that are reminiscent of the trauma
  • Negative thoughts and feelings
  • Decreased interest in activities
By seeing a therapist, a person who suffers from PTSD-like symptoms can learn new coping strategies, begin to comprehend what has happened, and compartmentalize the pieces of the event and how they can fit into the life they are already leading. Mental health counselors are trained to use therapeutic counseling techniques designed to fit a person's specific needs.

Therapy becomes a safe space to come to terms with the sometimes heavy burden of life, to find their own answers through the guidance of a trained professional, and to lessen unwanted symptoms that have become a hindrance to living life.
