Depression Counseling: 5 Steps To Start Thinking Positively

Jun 28, 2018

A big part of life is your perspective. While a positive perspective can't make bad things into good things (it's psychology, not magic), it can help you adapt to changing situations with greater ease and grace. Additionally, thinking positively can help you focus on what's important in your life, letting negativity flow away from you.

How do you start thinking positively, though? Just follow these simple steps:

5 Steps to Start Thinking Positively

Step #1: Accept Responsibility For Your Actions (Good and Bad)
One common problem that stops people from thinking positively is that, in their minds, they're someone things happen to. If they succeed, it's because they were lucky, rather than because of all the hard work they put in. If that person fails, then it's because he or she was unlucky, rather than the lack of preparation or effort that went into the task. In order to think positively, you have to be an actor in your own life. That means when things happen, you had a hand in it, and you need to take credit for that, good or bad. At the same time, though, remember not to take credit for things that really were outside of your control. Balance is important.

Step #2: Spend Time Around Positive People
The people you spend time with will have an effect on you. For example, have you ever been at work, and there's that one co-worker who just complains about everything? Nothing is ever good, and it's always a reason to grumble? Did you ever notice that you always had a bad day when you're around that person, even if things were pretty good in perspective? If you spend time around positive people, you'll notice the opposite effect; everything always seems all right, even if it should have been a bad day.

Step #3: Recognize When You're Having Negative Thoughts (And Yank Them Out)
No one's thoughts are made of sugar and sunshine all the time, but when your own brain is trying to sabotage your efforts, you need to recognize it, and stop it. For example, say that you're working on a painting. If you find yourself thinking things like, "I'm never going to be good at this," then you need to recognize that negative thought, and pull it out. Never or can't are words that will sabotage your efforts, and which will lead to your brain trying to eat itself. Remember, it's all right to admit something is difficult, or that you have room for improvement, but it is not all right to tell yourself your efforts are worthless.

Tip #4: Set Your Goals, Mark Your Progress
Another good way to think positively is to set goals that are clearly defined, and which you can clearly see your own progress. For example, saying, "I want to get in shape," isn't setting a specific goal. Saying, "I want to lose 15 pounds, and be able to complete and hour-long workout with ease," is more specific, and it gives you specific marks you can judge yourself on. While you might argue whether or not you're in better shape, you cannot argue that after you've been on your routine for a month that you've lost five pounds. The clearer your goals, the more positive your mindset will be.

Tip #5: Invest in Self-Care
Self-care means that you take care of yourself. You get enough rest, you shower, you eat, and you give your mind time to recuperate. Self-care allows you to maintain your energy, and it is essential for thinking positively. If you're running yourself ragged, always moving from one brush fire to the next, then you won't have the energy you need to accomplish anything. Don't be afraid to take some time for yourself to catch your breath.

Overcoming depression is not easy, and it takes a unique approach to combat every individual's needs. For more help in your battle with this condition, simply contact us today!
